CBD oil continues to rise in popularity due to the potential health benefits it can bring to common, everyday conditions such as chronic pain and anxiety. We know of the potential health benefits CBD oil can have on humans, but what about dogs?
Dog owners are not only looking for preventative measures to keep their dog in tip top condition, but also as natural alternatives to treat problems where conventional medicine leaves their dogs with uncomfortable side effects. We explore whether it’s possible to use CBD oil for dogs, how and what type of CBD oil you should be using for them.
There are currently no studies that have been undertaken on using CBD oil on dogs to measure whether it helps with certain conditions. However, much has been anecdotal from dog owners who have witnessed the benefits of using CBD for their dogs as a natural alternative. This evidence from dog owners suggests that CBD oil has helped with treating pain, as well as controlling seizures.
According to the American Kennel Club; “TheAKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) issponsoring a study through the Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences to evaluate the use of CBD in treatment-resistant epileptic dogs. The CHF hopes that this will be the first study to gain scientific data on the use of CBD in dogs with this condition.”
There has been no formal studies of using CBD oil on dogs which understandably makes dog owners wary about using it as there are not many pros and cons available about its use online. Up until recent times, it has mostly been anecdotal information and forum related advice and suggestions that has led owners to try CBD for their dogs. Many dog owners across the globe are already using it on their four legged friends.
Often, CBD oil becomes an alternative when other medical alternatives disagree with the dog. Whilst CBD does not cure conditions, it has the potential to help them. A popular use for CBD oil in dogs is those with arthritis and anxiety.
Whilst a lot is currently speculative, many anecdotal stories of dogs using CBD oil have ranged from helping with the pain associated with arthritis and seizures in dogs. Due to the anti inflammatory properties of CBD it can have cardiac benefits, anti nausea and help with anxiety, although there are no conclusive studies that CBD will help these conditions in dogs.
There are lots of questions about whether you can use human CBD oil on dogs if you were to try it for your dogs. The answer is yes, as long as it’s a natural CBD oil that doesnot contain pesticides, fungicides, or solvents.
All CBD manufacturers must display lab reports online which certificates the amount of CBD that is in the product. You need to ensure that the CBD oil has little or no THC in the oil, as the THC is what gets you high. The best way to administer CBD to a dog is with CBD oil as you can administer their dosage with drops.
The higher quality and higher purity of CBD oil is generally reflected in the price, but it’s always important to check the lab reports of any CBD oil you are purchasing for a dog.
Like any natural alternative, there can be side effects and as there is no confirmed studies yet there is not an approved dosage for dogs. Always consult a vet before trying CBD oil for your dog's condition.
